Ousters, retirements and a slew of C-suite switch-ups — Becker’s has reported the following hospital and health system CEO departures in 2024.

March

1. Dale Maxwell plans to retire as CEO of Albuquerque, N.M.-based Presbyterian Healthcare Services, effective July 31. The system has not yet tapped a successor. 

2. Craig Lambrecht, MD, has resigned as CEO of the combined Billings Clinic-Logan Health system, which merged into a nine-hospital entity Sept. 1. Clint Seger, MD, chief physician executive of the health system and CEO of Billings (Mont.) Clinic, will become co-CEO for the system along with Kevin Abel, president of Logan Health Whitefish and Logan Health Medical Center in Kalispell.

3. Bill Sheron is retiring as president and CEO of Wooster (Ohio) Community Hospital, ending a four-decade career as a hospital CEO. Scott Boyes, CFO and COO at Wooster, has been selected to succeed Mr. Sheron after a new CFO is hired.

4. John Cacciamani, MD, is stepping down from his role as president and CEO of  Philadelphia-based Chestnut Hill Hospital, part of Philadelphia-based Temple Health. Richard Newell was named to the helm, effective April 8; he currently serves as president and CEO of Tower Health’s Phoenixville (Pa.) Hospital and Pottstown (Pa.) Hospital.

5. Darrell Lentz has stepped down from his position as president and CEO of McLaren Bay Region in Bay City, Mich. The hospital did not specify a reason for his resignation. Jamie Carter was named interim CEO and president March 1. 

February

1. Scott Moran, MD, CEO of Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center, a maximum-security forensic psychiatric hospital in Jessup, Md., is on leave amid allegations he bullied and threatened staff. Two health department employees petitioned for a restraining order against Dr. Moran, and on Feb. 28, he agreed in court to a restraining order prohibiting him from coming to Clifton as well as the state administrative offices for the Maryland Department of Health.

2. Leslie Marsh was fired from her role as CEO of Lexington (Neb.) Regional Health Center. Her employment was terminated during a board meeting, where some members cited little progress in the CEO’s job performance since her last evaluation in 2023.

3. E.J. Kuiper, CEO of Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health’s Midwest division, is leaving his post to helm Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System in Baton Rouge, La.

4. Emily Mastaler is stepping down as CEO of River Hospital in Alexandria Bay, N.Y., for a new role as chief administrative officer of Stony Brook Southampton (N.Y.) Hospital.

5. Tom Manion is wrapping up his time as president and CEO of New London (N.H.) Hospital. Its parent company, Dartmouth Health, has transferred him to the COO position at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

6. Brian Dietz resigned as president and CEO of Macomb, Ill.-based McDonough District Hospital, on Feb. 20. The board has voted to extend Bill Murdock as interim president — a role he has held since late December, when Mr. Dietz was suspended with pay pending an investigation into allegations regarding hospital management.

7. Janice Murphy, MSN, is planning to retire as president and CEO of Cleveland-based Sisters of Charity Health System once a successor is identified. 

8. Don Mueller is resigning as president and CEO of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia to join Siskin Children’s Institute in Chattanooga, Tenn., a nonprofit organization that provides diagnostic services and treatment for special needs children. In July, Mr. Mueller was required to be on-site five days a week after state health inspectors identified safety lapses.

9. Sherie Hickman is retiring from her role as CEO of Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch, Calif, effective April 12. The health system has not named a successor yet. 

10. Justin Lundbye, MD, is stepping down from Waterbury (Conn.) Health March 8 to become president of Long Island, N.Y.-based Good Samaritan Hospital. Deborah Weymouth, current CEO of Manchester-based Eastern Connecticut Health Network, will assume his responsibilities in addition to her existing ones. Together, the systems compose Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings’ Connecticut footprint; all three of their hospitals are pending sale to Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health. 

11. Nathan Hough has resigned as president and CEO of Chadron (Neb.) Community Hospital and Health Services to “pursue a new opportunity closer to family.” Jennifer Brown, the hospital’s CFO since April 2017, was selected to serve as interim CEO.

12. Scott Foster, MD, is resigning as chief executive of PeaceHealth Medical Group in Vancouver, Wash. He is returning home to care for his aging parents in Scotland. 

13. Stace Holland is no longer CEO of Houston, Mo.-based Texas County Memorial Hospital. The board unanimously voted to remove him after he attempted to terminate the hospital’s CFO,  Linda Pamperien. Mr. Holland is the second CEO in two years to exit the hospital after trying to fire Ms. Pamperian. 

14. Paula Baker is retiring as president and CEO of Joplin, Mo.-based Freeman Health System after 13 years in the role. The health system has not announced a successor. 

15. Jay Stallings plans to retire as CEO of Washakie Medical Center in Worland, Wyo., this spring after a decade in the position. Lisa Van Brunt, MSN, RN, chief nursing officer, will be promoted to CEO upon his departure.

16. Carol Burrell, president and CEO of Gainesville-based Northeast Georgia Health System since 2011, plans to retire “within the next year or so.” She intends to remain in the role until a successor is named. 

January

1. Thomas Priselac, president and CEO of Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles, has announced his retirement after 30 years in the role. 

2. Theresa Rutherford, MSN, RN, president and CEO of HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, Ill., plans to retire from HSHS this spring. 

3. Peter Banko, president of a three-state division within Chicago-based CommonSpirit and former CEO of its Centennial, Colo.-based Centura Health joint venture, has stepped down from the organization.

4. Kathy Bailey, RN, plans to retire from the helm of Morganton, N.C.-based UNC Health Blue Ridge in June. 

5. Anthony Boutin, MD, was ousted from his role as president and CEO of Nassau University Medical Center, a 530-bed tertiary care teaching hospital in East Meadow, N.Y.

6. Kenneth Rose, president and CEO of Texas Health Hospital Mansfield, is leaving to helm UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook (Ill.).

7. Thomas Kidd, CEO of Macon Community Hospital in Lafayette, Tenn., has retired. 

8. Natalie Mussi, the longtime CEO of HCA’s Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif., is leaving to take on a new role as vice president of operations for Surgery Ventures, a national surgery center network owned by HCA.

9. John Hunter, MD, will step down from his role as executive vice president and CEO of OHSU Health as the system anticipates a merger with Legacy Health. Both systems are based in Portland, Ore. 

10. William Ermann will retire as CEO of Guymon, Okla.-based Memorial Hospital of Texas County on March 30 after more than three years at the helm. He submitted his resignation in December as part of a cost-reduction plan initiated in May. Three board members resigned amid the announcement. 

11. Brian Dietz was suspended from his role as president and CEO of the Macomb, Ill.-based McDonough District Hospital, pending an investigation into recent allegations regarding hospital management.
