The digestive system is often linked to emotional stress. When you are stressed, the disruptions affect your gut. You can get anything from nausea, heartburn, constipation or irritable bowel syndrome.
I’d like to share a client case that I have worked on about how emotions are connected to the digestive system.
Valarie (not her real name) had been experiencing stomach and digestive issues for years. Even though she had seen doctors, taken medication and changed her diet, her symptoms still remained. From feeling depleted, Valerie was aware that her energy system needed some rebalancing work. It was when she approached me for help.
For a start, I wanted to find out more about her situation that could explain her physical symptoms. Digestive issues are often related to an inability to assimilate or “digest” life. Loose runny stools are associated with running away from one’s problems whereas constipation is about being stuck in the past.
A chat with Valarie revealed that she has the tendency to worry. Her mind would lead her to imagine worst-case scenarios. Valarie often experienced anxiety symptoms such as difficulties in breathing, pressure in the chest, racing heart, etc. She found the uncertainties of life hard to cope. Her worries would often keep her up at night.
Clearly, Valerie needed help to let go of her anxiety. Together, we worked on identifying the metaphysical reasons that could also obstruct her ability to digest easily. Could her issues be connected to any negative experiences in the past? Fortunately, we were able to unearth some answers.
As Valerie recalled, when she was in her teens, her stomach would act up every morning. She would get loose runny stools just before needing to leave home for her new school. Doctors could not determine what was truly wrong with her.
Well, as we dug deeper into her emotions, we found out that Valerie was consumed by worry at that time. Her overwhelming worry was about not being able to make friends who would accept her as she had changed to the new school during mid-year. Because she did not know how to deal with the worry, it appears that her body tried to “protect” her with an excuse for her to skip school.
From having acquired some answers, we proceeded to clear the stuck energies. Also, we worked on restoring a sense of safety and calm, creating greater acceptance and being present in the here and now. Additionally, we installed a new set of beliefs about health; so that her physical body can heal and rejuvenate itself.
It would be presumptuous to attribute 100% of any immediate health improvements to our sessions together since she has been under on-going medication and also making lifestyle changes. Still, our sessions left her a lot lighter, confident and more ready to take charge of her life. Valerie was coached on how she can reframe her situations through a more positive lens. As she contemplated her future, Valerie felt a lot more empowered. It is great that she is now set on the path of improved health and well-being in the long run.
